Claims Corner - Illegal Transshipments
With the heightened tariffs in many countries, shippers are becoming creative with their attempts to evade U.S. laws by illegally routing goods through countries with lower duty rates, falsely claiming that country as the “country of origin”. Beware…. Customs has introduced a new 40% tariff that will be levied against any shipper found guilty of transshipping. CBP is sparing no expense to identify these illegal transactions.
Per CBP, “CBP is using advanced technology and interagency partnerships to stop them. Importers found attempting illegal transshipment are subject to severe consequences, including:
- Inventory seizure
- Criminal penalties
- Elevated tariffs
- Fine
With the new 40% tariff on illegally transshipped goods, the cost of illegal transshipment will be even higher. Don't take the risk. Learn more here "
In addition to the new 40% tariff penalty, shippers can lose their Customs bond and import privileges. If you suspect any transshipment, please alert your surety and CBP.
