Security - Cybersecurity Awareness Month
This October, we mark the 21st National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a global initiative established by the United States Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCSA). IB&M is dedicated to enhancing cybersecurity awareness and supporting this important global effort. We have the Cyber policies you need to stay protected!
This year’s theme ‘Secure our world’ recognizes the importance of taking daily action to reduce risks when online and connected to devices. It aims to draw our attention to simple but important steps such as setting stronger passwords, updating software, thinking before we click and using multifactor authentication to secure our and our organization’s digital assets.
Key tip: Regular Patching: Failing to apply regular patches or updates leaves your system exposed to known vulnerabilities. Cybercriminals exploit these vulnerabilities to gain unauthorized access, steal data or disrupt organizations. This has now risen to the same level as phishing as a way to gain unauthorized access. Some best practices to follow are:
• Ensuring timely patching i.e., installing updates regularly
• Enabling automatic updates where possible
• Refraining from use of unsupported end of life software (software that is not patched or supported)
• Visiting vendor sites directly rather than clicking on advertisements or email links
• Avoiding updates while using untrusted networks
Investing in cyber safety: While maintaining cyber safety requires effort, it is a wise investment. The global average cost of a data breach is $4.35 million, and these expenses affect everyone, including our customers. By staying vigilant, we protect ourselves and those we serve.
